This year "The Last Night of the Proms"
concert (2003) is on Saturday 10th May at Pendle Hippodrome
Theatre in Colne. Adult tickets are £6.00 each (£5.00
conessions). This year there is once again a wide selection
of music finishing with the traditional proms music (Pomp
and Circumstance, Sea Songs, Tom Bowling, Hornpipe, Judas Macabeus,
Jerusalem). This year the soloist is Lyn Slater and the concert
will be compered by Eric Beardsworth.
The following is an extract taken from the
Nelson Leader - a letter concerning one of the orchestra's
'Last Night of the Proms' concerts of the past:
The Pendle Youth Orchestra exceeded its
own high standards at the Hippodrome on Saturday night. Shakespeare
would surely have said "Gentlefolk in Colne who stayed
at home shall think themselves accursed they were not here."
This is no band of triers plodding gamely through the notes
in front of doting parents. This is a finely-honed unit injecting
varied and challenging music with nuance and finesse and echoing
any mood demanded by their conductor. Melody flowed seamlessly
between the instruments like thick cordial infiltrating fresh
spring water and cut-offs were as sharp as the snap of a single
finger of chocolate Kit-Kat. Conductor Stuart Dickinson radiated
his musical energy to the crowded, and enthusiastic audience
through the creasing and uncreasing of the back of his jacket
- an endless sea of forked lightning on which his balding
head dipped and rose with the music. Ably complemented by
the two lady vocalists and the compere, the orchestra's night
was a tribute to all those hours of practice and to the work
of the tireless back-up team which helped to make it all possible.
Marks for the night! It has got to be 11 out of 10 for this
rough-hewn diamond son of Pendle and his magical music makers.
Well done, Stuart!
